Ear & Body Piercing

Did you know that the practice of body piercing is at least 5000 years old?! Even back then there were many varied reasons as to why people had piercings. These included self-expression, the representation of a rite of passage or milestone in someone’s life, as well as for spiritual, religious or cultural reasons. The reasons for getting pierced today are similar to the reasons our ancestors desired to pierce their bodies thousands of years ago!

Today piercing is probably just as popular as it was then, and has definitely become more mainstream in the last few years. There are so many possibilities for varied piercings and piercing jewellery with which to adorn them, it’s an exciting time! So let me help you with your piercing, I can give you my advice, experience and professionalism in helping you to achieve the piercing you want, whatever the reason for it!  All from my salon in Sevenoaks.

“As usual, it was a wonderful experience. Katy is so accommodating and easy to chat to. This is my third cartilage piercing with Bodylines and I wouldn’t go or recommend anywhere else now. Each piercing has been beautifully placed, with gorgeous jewellery and healed perfectly! Thank you Katy and see you soon x”

What do you use to pierce the skin?

At Bodylines, we use a sterile, disposable, single-use, hollow piercing needle or cannula to carry out your piercing.

This pierces a hole in a controlled way and because it is hollow it removes a tiny piece of skin forming the hole or piercing. When the needle is removed from the piercing, the plastic tube surrounding it remains. The jewellery is then fed through the tube and into the piercing where it is secured by titanium ball(s).

All equipment used during this process including the jewellery has been sterilised in an autoclave.

Guns are never used at Bodylines for the following reasons:

  • A piercing gun cannot be sterilised, so there is a risk of transferring blood or bodily fluids from one client to the next.
  • When piercing with a gun, the gun piercing jewellery is placed in the spring loaded mechanism and when the catch is released it is the blunt end of this jewellery which forces a hole in the ear. This can cause blunt force trauma and tissue damage to the surrounding skin much like that occurring in a crush injury. There is also a risk of the gun malfunctioning.
  • The jewellery used for gun piercing has a butterfly which can cause embedding if there is any swelling to the ear after piercing. It is also a standard size and does not allow for variations in anatomy. It is also not generally made from a high quality metal such as medical grade titanium which is used at Bodylines.
Does it hurt?

Your new piercing may feel uncomfortable for a few seconds. A small pair of sterilised forceps is used to hold the skin in place, which feels like a firm pressure.

How long does it take?

The piercing itself only takes a few seconds.

What jewellery do you use?

You can choose from a range of sterilised medical grade titanium and 14ct white gold jewellery for your piercing. These are some of the most suitable metals to be positioned in or near the human body for long periods of time without causing side effects.

The piercing jewellery used at Bodylines is specific to needle piercing, is of the highest standard and is pre-sterilised. Flat backed labrets/studs are used for lobe and nose piercing.

Please do not bring your own jewellery as the salon cannot use it for initial piercings.

What happens at your appointment?

You will be asked to fill in a piercing consultation form online before your appointment.

When you come in for your appointment, you will choose your jewellery and we will discuss your piercing requirements.

The area to be pierced will be sanitised and marked with temporary ink.

When we are both happy to go ahead, the piercing will be done using a single-use sterile disposable needle, and the jewellery inserted.

It is essential that you follow a proper aftercare routine to keep the piercing clean and free from infection. You will be given an aftercare leaflet and saline solution is available for purchase.

Healing times
  • Lobes: 6-8 weeks.
  • Oral piercings: 2-4 weeks
  • Nose: 3-4 months
  • Helix/cartilage: 3-4 months
  • Navel/Nipple 6-12 months
Aftercare

Saline aftercare solution is available to buy for home care use and makes aftercare easy!

Please follow the advice on your aftercare leaflet. Your piercing has been completed using sterile equipment and jewellery and you need to continue to look after it to prevent infection and allow it to heal properly.

Clean the piercing twice a day by spraying it with a saline solution. Try to do this until the piercing has healed.

You can also gently remove any crusting or discharge with a saline soaked cotton bud after you have sprayed and softened the piercing, but this part is not essential.

Apart from this, the best thing you can do is to leave the piercing alone. Touch it as little as possible and allow it to settle. Do not twist or turn it as this can tear the piercing. Every week or so, with clean hands, check that the balls are screwed tight onto the stem of the jewellery.

Avoid swimming for a few days after piercing. Jewellery can be changed when the piercing is fully healed. Bodylines offers a piercing jewellery change service if you need help or advice with this. You can also book this online.
